So the year and the decade changed.
Don’t worry, I didn’t forget. I am, thankfully, still in complete charge of my faculties, but mostly I was surprised by the fact that I hadn’t written in a while, especially with the change of year. Aren’t bloggers supposed to write about such things???
Meh.
I am not against celebrating another revolution around the sun, but I do have some thoughts on the subject. I mean, are you surprised? Here’s what I’m thinking about: does it matter enough to make a HUGE deal? Don’t get me wrong, I celebrate too! Perhaps I should explain myself a little more.
Sometimes I think people put so much stock on the full revolution around the sun that it affects their lives in a negative way. For example, New Year’s Resolutions have always bugged me, mostly because I want to know why we only make these declarations one time a year. So what happens right before January? We make a long laundry list of “life changes” and then can’t make deliberate, focused changes, thus setting ourselves up for failure. Personally, I like to make one blanket statement. For example, this year I’m focusing on spreading positivity!
Yes, yes. I hear you. That’s what I do. It’s what my blog is called! But just because I have been focusing on this for years doesn’t mean I can’t do it again… right?
This year, to celebrate the new decade and start of another what promises to be amazing new year, my friends and I ran the New York Road Runners New Year’s Eve Midnight Run! It’s a four mile race in Central Park. Everyone counts down the New Year, the fireworks go off and we run.
I was so proud of my friend Danielle. This was her first running race and she was on fire! After trying to move between all the people not running and looking at the fireworks (spatial awareness, people!), we found a nice pace. At one point, we were running at a pace faster than she usually does. You see what I mean?! Fire!
My other friend, C.L. deserves honorable mention also. It wasn’t his first race, but he has just recently started running… a lot. His times are amazing and his resolve to run this year is quite inspiring. We even got a shout out from the announcer (who happens to be my neighbor)!
We actually joined this website (that C.L. found) called Run the Year where we are trying to run/bike/swim 2,020 miles in the year 2020. Luckily, we got an instant 12 miles two hours into the new year! A nice start, if I say so myself.
I was having a conversation the other day with another amazing human, Sharon. She said something that I absolutely loved, so I am going to use it to close on these, my first comments of the new year. She said, “I feel like my own science experiment.” I love this idea! Not only in January, my readers. This is 24/7/52/365! This life is a wondrous gift that we’ve been given and I plan on enjoying the heck out of it, no matter what part of the sun revolution we are in.
